Burrinjuck Electorate

alt

The electoral district of Burrinjuck covers some 28,000 km² in a big square above Canberra and stretches from Cowra in the north to Gundagai in the south, and from Crookwell in the east to Grenfell and Cootamundra.

The electoral district of Burrinjuck was first formed in 1950. Its current Member, Katrina Hodgkinson, was first elected during the March 1999 State Election.  At that election Burrinjuck included the City of Goulburn, and the local government areas of Mulwaree, Crookwell, Gunning, Gundagai, Tumut, Boorowa and parts of Harden, Wingecarribee and Yarrowlumla Shires.

Katrina was re-elected in the 2003 and 2007 State Elections, each time with an increasing margin.  Following the redistribution of NSW electorates in 2006, Katrina was returned comfortably, at the March 2007 election, achieving 64.7% of the first preference votes and a two-party preferred vote of 67.33%.

Burrinjuck now has 49,007 people enrolled to vote and consists of the local government areas of Upper Lachlan, Boorowa, Gundagai, Cowra, Weddin, Young, Harden and Cootamundra, most of Yass Valley Shire excluding Sutton and parts of Blayney, Bland, and Junee Shires.

Land use within Burrinjuck is primarily agricultural with grazing predominating in the east trending to cropping towards the West.  There are some areas of light industry in the larger towns and some forestry areas to the South.  Burrinjuck is well known for its production of fine Merino wool.
