Bimberi Reserve in the Snowy Mountains National Park

This lush pasture contrasts
with the rest of rural Australia,
in the grips of a major
drought.
In less than a week
it was ash!
The result of the disasterous
Snowy Mountains Fires.

The sign reads,
"Management of wilderness
aims to protect large
natural areas and the
functioning of
their ecosystems with
a minimum of human
interference – and provide
opportunities for self-reliant
recreation."

Katrina Hodgkinson MP and
Peter Cochran on Yaouk Camp
on the Murrumbidgee River.

Oldfield's Hut, built in the 1890s,
is a heritage listed property
which was saved by
the Yaouk Bushfire Brigade
when the bushfires passed through
his area in late Jan 2003.

Fallen gum tree limbs,
shedding bark and leaf litter!
Peter Cochran estimates
50 tonnes
of vegetable litter per hectare
within the Snowy Mountains
National Park.

The amount of
combustible material is
appalling!

Rendezvous with a helicopter
to take the group to view
the Mountains and see
the fire fighting on Mt Morgan.

Katrina reported that what
they had seen close at
hand at Bimberi Reserve
was repeated in the areas
the helicopter took them.
